Basil plants are most commonly affected by soil that is too dry or wet. Basil plants need moist, high quality soil with good drainage to thrive in full sunlight. If your basil plant is showing signs of weakness, you should rethink your basil watering schedule. Basil thrives in moist soil and is sensitive to changes in its environment.

Basil needs to be watered every three days during the warmer months to keep the soil from drying out. If your pot is in a more shady area, you may be able to water it every four days adequately. Black plastic pots are where most store-bought basil plants come from. When placed in sunlight, these transfer heat more quickly. To prevent the soil from drying out too quickly, it’s best to transfer your basil to a ceramic, clay or terracotta pot.
